Elon Musk has stirred political controversy once again by publicly endorsing the work of far-right activist Tommy Robinson. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s comments have sparked backlash from British political leaders.
Robinson, who was banned from Twitter in 2018 for violating policies on “hateful content,” had his account reinstated last year after Musk acquired and rebranded the platform, now called X. Robinson is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for violating a court order related to false accusations he made about a Syrian schoolboy in a documentary.
This week, Musk not only endorsed Robinson’s documentary via X but also called for his release from prison. The endorsement drew swift criticism, including from Labour MP Stella Creasy, who told POLITICO that Musk’s actions “highlight just how much of a threat he poses to democracy.”
Adding to the controversy, Musk reportedly met with Nigel Farage last month at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where they discussed a possible donation to Farage’s Reform UK party, according to a report by the BBC. The former Brexit Party leader was effusive in his praise for Musk on Friday, calling the billionaire an “absolute hero” and claiming that he is “very helpful to our cause.”
While Farage expressed admiration for Musk, he noted that their views do not always align, saying, “He has a whole range of opinions, some of which I agree with very strongly, and others of which I’m more reticent about.”
Musk’s involvement in British political discourse continues to raise questions about the influence of tech billionaires on democratic institutions and free speech.
