An ancient city, largely unknown to the public, has made its way from the heart of Macedonia to Athens, eager to introduce itself to its audience. Europos, a significant urban center of ancient Bottiaea situated 18 kilometers from Pella, between the Axios River and Goumenissa, is the star of the exhibition “Europos the City” at the National Archaeological Museum.
This unique exhibition comprises five distinct sections that showcase various aspects of life for the city’s inhabitants, who are the first ones referred to as Europeans in historical inscriptions. The display includes seventeen original artifacts, complemented by a wealth of photographic and audiovisual materials. Among these are two short films: one focuses on the ancient city and its archaeological site, while the other provides a biography of Seleucus I, a notable successor of Alexander the Great who was born in Europos.
The exhibition will be on display at the National Archaeological Museum until March 16, 2025. (12/18/2024)
