Michel Barnier, the EU’s former Brexit negotiator, will join the Les Républicains party members in the National Assembly, where they hold 50 of the 577 seats. As prime minister, Barnier led a minority government with Les Républicains backing and a coalition supporting President Emmanuel Macron. His tenure ended after three months when he failed a no-confidence motion orchestrated by left-wing and far-right groups.
Following his victory on Sunday, Barnier expressed his intention to work with “loyalty and freedom” within his group, advocating for cooperation with all responsible political entities to address France’s growing political instability. Les Républicains are currently considering their role in new Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s government after joining the last two unsuccessful ones.
The contest for Paris’ second district saw an unexpected twist when French Culture Minister Rachida Dati, also from Les Républicains and a local district official, contemplated a run. Dati eventually dropped her plans after receiving party support for her mayoral campaign in Paris slated for next March.
