European Survey Reveals Czech Republic’s Strongest Trust in Nuclear Energy Among EU Nations

Prague – The Czech Republic stands out as the European Union member with the highest level of trust in nuclear energy, with 77 percent of citizens believing in its beneficial impact on the future. This figure tops the chart among all EU countries, while neighboring Austria exhibits the most skepticism. These insights come from a recent Eurobarometer survey.

The survey explored public attitudes towards nuclear energy, revealing that the Czech Republic is the frontrunner in support. More than 29 percent of Czechs expressed a strong belief in the positive role of nuclear energy for the nation’s technological and energy progress. Additionally, 48 percent indicated a generally favorable perspective, while only around 17 percent reported a negative view, the lowest in the EU.

“This European survey aligns with our long-term findings. Support for nuclear energy in the Czech Republic has consistently been the highest in the EU for nearly 25 years, dating back to the launch of the Temelín nuclear power plant. It reflects a historical inclination among Czechs toward technology compared to other European nations since the era of Austria-Hungary,” noted Ladislav Kříž, spokesperson for ČEZ, in response to the survey’s findings.

Conversely, some nearby countries showcase a contrasting sentiment towards nuclear energy. In Austria, 67 percent of respondents expressed concern about the negative effects of nuclear energy. This apprehension is also seen, albeit to a lesser extent, in Greece and Germany. In several other EU countries, a generally positive viewpoint on nuclear energy prevails over negative opinions.

The rise in support for nuclear energy is further corroborated by local surveys. An IBRS agency poll from late last year indicated that 71 percent of the Czech population supports its development, marking a two-point increase from the previous year.

The Czech government’s future energy strategy aims to position nuclear energy, alongside renewable resources, as key components of the country’s energy mix. (February 10)

  1. Trust in nuclear energy? Brilliant! Just what we need—a little radioactive glow to spice up our mornings. Guess it’s either that or relying on windmills and solar panels, which are about as reliable as a British summer! 😂💡 #NuclearConfidence
