Ljubljana – Slovenia has commenced full implementation of the European Parliament and Council regulation regarding transparency and targeting in political advertising. This initiative aims to enhance transparency in political campaigns, requiring that all political advertisements be clearly labeled as such, along with details about the client and the advertisement’s cost.
The regulation establishes uniform rules for all European Union member states, targeting covert political advertising, the misuse of personal data, and foreign influences. Moving forward, every political ad must prominently state its nature as political and include information about the client or sponsor, the expenditure involved, and any targeting methods employed. This will enable citizens to more easily identify the source and intended audience of various messages.
Slovenia is preparing for both parliamentary and local elections in the upcoming year, with the parliamentary elections scheduled for spring and local elections in autumn. The pre-election campaign atmosphere is already noticeable. The Information Commissioner will oversee compliance with the regulation concerning targeting and advertisement display in online political advertising. Additionally, the Agency for Communication Networks and Services of the Republic of Slovenia will play a supervisory role focused on digital services, while further involvement from the Inspectorate for Culture and Media and the Inspectorate for Internal Affairs is anticipated.
