A train accident in Adamuz (Córdoba) on Sunday has resulted in the deaths of at least 39 individuals and left another 152 injured, prompting condolences and reactions from various European leaders and countries.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was among the first to respond, expressing her sorrow on social media, calling the news from Adamuz “terrible,” and extending condolences to the victims’ families and the Spanish people.
The President of the European Council, António Costa, also shared his dismay regarding the incident, offering “deepest solidarity with the victims, their loved ones, and the Spanish people.”
"My most sincere condolences to the bereaved families and all my support to the injured, as well as to the emergency teams that have been mobilized," remarked Costa.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola added her wishes for the families and loved ones to find “strength and comfort in these very difficult times,” affirming that “Europe stands with the Spanish people.”
Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, expressed her grief over the “devastating” news and sent her thoughts to the families of the victims.
French President Emmanuel Macron reacted by lamenting the “rail tragedy (that) shakes Andalusia,” stating, “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all the Spanish people. France stands with you.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her sorrow, stating that “Italy shares Spain’s grief over this tragedy,” while sending thoughts to the victims and their families.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed “deep shock” at the accident and offered his condolences, wishing for a quick recovery for the injured and affirming that “Germany stands with Spain at this time.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sent “sincere condolences to the families affected” and expressed solidarity with the Spanish people.
Portugal’s government conveyed its “deepest condolences” and full solidarity with Spain following the accident. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed solidarity and sent thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof shared a message in Spanish, regretting the “terrible news from Spain” and indicating he reached out to President Pedro Sánchez to express his support.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha conveyed sorrow over the “fatal rail accident” and extended condolences to the Spanish people, wishing for the recovery of the injured and offering strength to the Spanish friends.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the relatives of the victims. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured. Courage, dear Spanish friends," noted the Ukrainian minister.
The United Kingdom expressed sadness over the accident, with Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper stating, “We are thinking of all those affected by this terrible accident and of the Spanish people at this very distressing time.”
Several other European nations, including Serbia, Estonia, Croatia, Malta, and Ireland, have also expressed their condolences and sadness regarding the train accident in Córdoba.
