BRUSSELS – The European Council has endorsed the European Commission’s proposal for Bulgaria to adopt the euro starting January 1, 2026, as announced by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov on his official profile on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter).
Colleagues have congratulated Bulgaria on its efforts. Thank you for the support, the Bulgarian Prime Minister stated.
The European Council acknowledges Bulgaria’s successful completion of all criteria for joining the eurozone on January 1 next year, as noted in the conclusions from the recent meeting of EU heads of state and government in Brussels.
The European Council urges the Council of the EU to promptly adopt the relevant proposals from the European Commission, as stated in the document.
The Council of the EU on Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) is set to vote on July 8 regarding the final three decisions concerning the country’s euro adoption. Additionally, the European Parliament is expected to vote the same day on its report regarding Bulgaria’s eurozone accession, which received preliminary approval earlier this week from the EP Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Subcommittee on Tax Matters.
