In a recent update on X, Lahbib described her meeting with Syrian leader Al-Sharaa as both courteous and comprehensive, focusing on the geopolitical dynamics in Syria and the surrounding border area. “I am in Syria with a definitive message: the future of Syria is for all its people,” she stated, adding that she would relay the positive messages received from local authorities to EU ministers.
As part of her visit, Lahbib is also engaging with NGOs and civil society representatives to explore ways to enhance European assistance. She revealed that the European Union is set to launch a new humanitarian aid package totaling 235 million euros for Syria and its neighboring countries, with 142.5 million dedicated specifically to initiatives within Syria.
Earlier this month, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Syria on behalf of the EU. However, their trip was marred by an incident in which Al-Sharaa refused to shake hands with Baerbock, opting instead to greet her male counterpart. Furthermore, Baerbock faced censorship on a state-affiliated TV network associated with the new administration.
According to Lahbib’s team, her visit proceeded without any incidents, as neither handshakes were exchanged, regardless of gender.
