BRUSSELS (ANP) – “There has been no security breach. The entry and exit system is not yet operational, which means data collection has not commenced,” stated a spokesperson.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that it is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the French IT firm Atos after a complaint was filed. The Financial Times reported that the investigation pertains to staff in Russia who were involved in acquiring software in 2021 for the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), designed to automatically register travelers from non-EU countries.
The system was initially due to launch last November, but the European Commission opted to delay its rollout because several countries, including the Netherlands, were unprepared. A new launch date has yet to be announced.
The EU Agency for the Management of Large-Scale IT Systems (EU-LISA) is responsible for ensuring all security standards are met, according to the European Commission spokesperson. The agency must also confirm that “security risks are mitigated before the system can become operational.”
