Brussels – The European Commission revealed on Friday its decision to finance 27 projects in Spain under the LIFE program, providing a total of 44.7 million euros. This funding constitutes 12.5% of the 358 million euros that will be allocated to 132 projects across Europe.
Of the total funding, 16 million euros will support Spanish projects focused on the clean energy transition, while 12.6 million euros will be dedicated to initiatives aimed at environmental and resource efficiency, the areas receiving the highest investment.
Noteworthy projects include InBioSoil, which employs fungi and natural microorganisms for soil decontamination in Spain and Belgium, and smallWAT, which treats wastewater and recovers nutrients using modular wetlands. Other projects include SENSE4LIFE, aimed at separating complex plastics from waste, and LIFE PMFree-Ports, which focuses on improving air quality in ports.
Additional initiatives will connect energy communities with local plans (PUBLINK), promote a one-stop shop for energy renovations (EFFIC-OSS) and training for these systems (BUILD-OSS), integrate efficiency services in rental housing (INSPIRE-US), and develop renewable heating and cooling networks in cities such as Tallinn, Barcelona, and Strasbourg (IncentEU).
The Commission will also designate 4.9 million euros for nature and biodiversity projects, such as restoring the Ballesteros lagoons and the Mosca River valley (BALLESTEROS) and conserving the endangered fan mussel (PINNACARE), which is critically threatened in the Mediterranean.
Moreover, 4.8 million euros will be allocated for climate change adaptation efforts, including enhancing climate resilience in historical areas of Spain and Portugal through digital building models (I-LIBIM), and another 4.1 million for mitigation initiatives like prototypes for ultra-fast electric vehicle charging (FREESVEE) and decarbonizing concrete by incorporating wood (TIMBER FOR ALL).
Lastly, Brussels will provide 1.1 million euros for climate governance to promote climate neutrality in the Catalan tourism sector (TOUR4CLIMA).
The European Commission emphasized that “LIFE projects are pivotal to the EU’s transition to a clean, circular, and resilient economy, aiding in biodiversity protection and restoration, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and contributing to the long-term goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.”
Beyond Spain, the European executive will extend LIFE Program funds to projects aimed at restoring nearly 2,000 hectares of heathland in Sweden to support pollinators, rivers in Poland, peatlands in Germany, and amphibian conservation in Belgium. (November 7, 2025)
