“We aim to expedite the cessation of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by January 1, 2027,” Kallas stated on social media after unveiling new sanctions against Russia. “Energy sales continue to fund Russia’s war,” she emphasized.
The EU has been determined to ban Russian gas imports for some time. Currently, member states and the European Parliament are reviewing a draft regulation that would prohibit imports starting January 1, 2028. If approved, the LNG ban would take effect a year earlier.
Since the onset of the Ukraine invasion in February 2022, the flow of Russian gas into the EU has significantly declined. In 2021, Russia represented 45 percent of gas imports, whereas last year, that figure dropped to just 19 percent. The Zeebrugge port remains a crucial entry point for LNG, primarily for transit to other nations. France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain continue to import Russian LNG, while Hungary, Slovakia, and Greece receive gas via the TurkStream pipeline.
