EUDA Alert: Unprecedented Surge of Synthetic Cathinones in Europe

Stockholm – A synthetic drug akin to khat is becoming more prevalent in Europe’s drug market. The EU’s drug agency, EUDA, has issued a warning about an “unprecedented” rise in imports and seizures.

In contrast to khat, a natural substance that contains cathinone and impacts the central nervous system similarly to amphetamines, the cathinones that EUDA is alerting about are chemically manufactured.

In 2023, the latest year covered in EUDA’s annual report for 2025, the imports and seizures of synthetic cathinones were three times greater than the total of amphetamine and methamphetamine seizures in Europe. The total amount of seizures surged from 4.5 tons in 2021 to 37 tons in 2023.

Significant quantities are thought to be entering via India through the Netherlands, and 53 production sites were identified in EU countries in 2023, including one in Sweden.

Oh joy, just what Europe needed—more synthetic stuff to spice up our already complicated relationship with substances! 😏 Who knew we’d be trading in the charm of khat for a lab-made version that’s practically begging for a health warning?

Oh great, just what we needed—more synthetic pick-me-ups to go with our morning coffee. Sounds like the EU is really on the ball, tackling the big issues like drug imports while we’re all just trying to survive the daily grind. 😏💼

Just when you thought Europe was running out of creative ways to spice up the weekend, synthetic cathinones come along like a bad sequel nobody asked for. Bravo, EU! 🎉 Who needs natural highs when you can have a delightful chemical cocktail? 🍸

Isn’t it just delightful how we’ve managed to trade one natural high for a synthetic rollercoaster? 🍃💊 Three times the trouble, and all we had to do was sit back and let the chemists have a go! 😂
