Helsinki – An investigation is nearing completion into several online platforms, including Chinese retailers AliExpress and Temu, as well as social media giants such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok, under the Digital Services Act (DSA), according to Henna Virkkunen, vice president of the Commission responsible for technological sovereignty, in a statement to AFP on Friday.
This regulation mandates that major global tech companies enhance their efforts to safeguard consumers and regulate online content.
“In the coming weeks and months, we will finalize many of these investigations,” stated Ms. Virkkunen, noting that “these will be the first decisions made under the Digital Services Act.”
The investigations have primarily concentrated on the “transparency of these platforms, the safeguarding of our democratic processes, the protection of minors, and online shopping,” as highlighted by Ms. Virkkunen, who also indicated that the EU is likely to initiate additional inquiries.
