Brussels – European sources indicate that the European climate target for 2040 may be discussed at the dinner among heads of state and government on Thursday evening.
After a prolonged period of uncertainty, the European Commission is set to unveil its quantified proposal for CO2 emission reductions by 2040 next Wednesday.
The European executive is likely to uphold its objective of a 90% reduction in emissions by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, though it may allow “flexibilities” for member states, potentially including the purchase of international carbon credits and investment in sustainable projects outside Europe.
Countries such as Italy, the Czech Republic, and Hungary are opposing the proposed 90% reduction target.
Meanwhile, France has consistently criticized the approach taken by the Commission, arguing that it has established an overly ambitious target without clear mechanisms for achieving it.
France is seeking assurances regarding industrial decarbonization and is advocating for increased support for nuclear energy from Brussels. (June 26, 2025)
