BRUSSELS — The European Commission has suggested a fact-finding mission to a disputed Soviet-era pipeline to help settle a contentious issue between Kyiv and Budapest and release significant financial support for Ukraine.
“We have proposed a mission to inspect the pipeline to Ukraine,” Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen stated to reporters on Thursday, noting that Ukraine had not yet replied to the request.
For several weeks, Hungary has withheld approval of a €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine due to concerns over the Druzhba pipeline, which carries oil from eastern Russia to Central Europe and has been inactive since early January.
