Sarajevo (Fena) – The European Union Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina has issued a warning regarding a draft legislation being considered in the Republika Srpska (RS) entity. This legislation aims to impose further restrictions on civil society activities and eliminate gender identity as a protected characteristic within the RS Criminal Code, which the EU views as a significant threat to fundamental rights and democratic principles.
The EU stresses that the implementation of these laws would hinder Bosnia and Herzegovina’s aspirations to join the European Union. It urges the authorities in RS to rescind the proposals, emphasizing that for Bosnia and Herzegovina to achieve a future in the EU, it must adhere to essential democratic values.
The EU Delegation highlights the importance of fostering an environment conducive to the effective operation of civil society, in accordance with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s international commitments and its European aspirations, while also maintaining anti-discrimination protections.
– Last week, the EU praised the passage of two key laws that are crucial for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s progress toward EU accession. The country has a genuine opportunity to initiate accession negotiations in the upcoming months, provided certain conditions are fulfilled. We encourage the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to prioritize reforms that will tangibly enhance citizens’ lives and avoid actions that compromise fundamental rights and democratic values – stated the EU Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
