EU Parliament to Kick Off Second Disability Rights Week

Strasbourg (Eurotoday) – The EU Parliament is committed to ensuring that all individuals with disabilities can live an independent life and be fully incorporated into society.

With the launch of a revived European Disability Strategy 2025-2030 and the next Report of the UNCRPD Committee on the European Union, Parliament will carry out its second Disability Rights Week from 2 to 6 December 2024, mainstreaming disability rights throughout all policy fields. 

What will be discussed in the second disability rights week?

According to the press of the European Parliament, European Parliament’s committees, across all policy domains, as well as lead Members of the European Parliament, will be discussing and holding events concerning existing and future policies that should be developed to empower persons with disabilities to live on an equivalent footing and realise their full potential.

As reported by sources, it is assessed that 16% of the global population currently undergo significant disability, and this number is growing due to population ageing and the growing prevalence of non-communicable conditions. People with disabilities require public health programs and healthcare services to be healthy, active, and employed as part of the community. 

Moreover, in March 2021, the European Commission assumed the Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030. With this ten-year scheme, the European Commission wants to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities in Europe and around the world. The Strategy is based on the results of the previous European Disability Strategy 2010-2020, which paved the way to a barrier-free Europe and empowered individuals with disabilities so they can relish their rights and participate fully in society and economy.
