Brussels (Eurotoday) – EU leaders held a videoconference with leaders of Canada, Türkiye, the UK, Iceland, and Norway to debrief them on their defence goals and agree on further cooperation.
After the Special European Council on March 6 regarding defence and Ukraine, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Council President Antonio Costa, and High Representative Kaja Kallas met virtually to discuss international cooperation on military defence.
An EU official told Eurotoday that all leaders emphasised the importance of working with like-minded NATO partners on defence and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine.
This videoconference took place at a time when the US administration’s commitment to defence cooperation with its NATO partners is being questioned, particularly after President Trump halted intelligence-sharing with Ukraine and suspended military aid following an unsuccessful meeting with President Zelensky regarding a potential agreement.
The participating partner countries welcomed the ReArm EU initiative and commended the EU on the key decisions taken at the extraordinary Council meeting.
President Costa reiterated his commitment to maintaining close international coordination.
