EU Initiatives and Technical Support for Enhancing the Bank of Albania’s Capabilities

The meeting between Gent Sejko, Governor of the Bank of Albania, and Silvio Gonzato, the EU ambassador to Tirana, focused on Albania’s progress and the challenges faced by countries seeking EU membership. They also discussed the European Commission’s strategies for facilitating and supporting the enlargement process.

Taking place at the central bank’s headquarters, Governor Sejko expressed his gratitude to Gonzato for the EU’s technical assistance, which has bolstered the capabilities of the Bank of Albania through IPA funds and Twinning programs. This support has been crucial in key areas of central banking, including macroeconomic and financial stability, auditing, supervision, and payment systems. It is aimed at preparing the bank for joining the European System of Central Banks and, subsequently, the Eurosystem.

Ambassador Gonzato congratulated Governor Sejko on Albania’s recent inclusion in the SEPA geographic area, a significant achievement coordinated by the Bank of Albania as part of a regional initiative aimed at modernizing payment systems in the Western Balkans. He pointed out that this membership marks a significant milestone in the Bank of Albania’s efforts within the broader context of European integration.

During their discussion, Governor Sejko provided insights into Albania’s economic landscape, highlighting the country’s stability and positive performance indicators despite existing challenges. He noted that the current focus of economic policies is on maintaining price stability, which involves adapting monetary policy to safeguard financial stability and ensure stable prices within the country.
