EU Countries Reach Agreement to Phase Out Russian Gas

A qualified majority of EU member states has approved the European Commission’s proposal to eliminate Russian gas imports by January 2028, according to Climate and Energy Minister Lars Aagaard (M).

“An energy-independent Europe is a stronger and safer Europe,” remarked Aagaard.

The agreement will undergo final negotiations with the European Parliament before it is implemented.

If successful, the EU will enforce a legally binding phased ban on imports of both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, aiming for a complete cessation by January 1, 2028.

Aagaard views this as an “ambitious signal” of commitment to the phase-out.

This agreement is also one of the most significant outcomes of the Danish EU presidency, which commenced on July 1.

“While we have made substantial efforts to eliminate Russian gas and oil from Europe in recent years, we have not yet succeeded. Therefore, it is essential that the Danish presidency has garnered overwhelming support from Europe’s energy ministers for the legislation that will ultimately ban Russian gas in the EU,” Aagaard concluded.

Right, because nothing says “stronger and safer” like paying more for gas from someone else while we wait for 2028. Must be nice to have a magic date on the calendar to solve all our energy woes! 😂💨

So, we’re all in for an energy independence party by 2028, eh? 🤷‍♂️ Can’t wait for the grand unveiling of our “new” gas sources—maybe we’ll just import fresh air from the Alps instead? 🍃

Looks like Europe is finally putting its foot down – nothing says “we’re serious” like a deadline set for 2028! 😏 Let’s just hope they don’t trip over their own ambitions before then!
