One official stated that Weyand will leave the Secretariat-General and move to the European University Institute in Florence for a teaching role while still receiving her EU salary.
“It’s a three-way musical chairs game,” commented an EU official, highlighting the ripple effect of the changes.
Weyand’s exit allows Ditte Juul Jørgensen, the former director-general for energy, to assume leadership of DG Trade.
Jørgensen’s move results in a vacancy at the energy department, which is now filled by Céline Gauer, the current director-general for reform and investment.
Gauer, known as a close ally of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, was initially a potential candidate for the role of competition chief, which was ultimately appointed to Anthony Whelan.
The reshuffling concludes with Declan Costello taking over Gauer’s previous position; he transfers from the Commission’s economic and financial affairs department (DG ECFIN).
This marks the first major reorganisation of senior roles since von der Leyen’s term began in 2019.
