NEW DELHI (ANP) – Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the current geopolitical landscape necessitates stronger collaboration with “trusted partners” to mitigate “harmful dependencies.” She stressed the EU’s commitment to establishing resilient supply chains, particularly in the semiconductor industry.
The European Union is prioritizing the diversification of its trade strategy by pursuing free trade agreements with various countries and regions, including those in South America.
In the realm of security and defense, both the EU and India recognize mutual opportunities for collaboration. Von der Leyen remarked, “India aims to diversify its military suppliers and gain access to new capabilities, a goal that aligns with Europe’s objectives.”
With the United States urging Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security, the EU is engaged in extensive discussions regarding the best approach to achieve this. Additionally, Europe intends to offer security assurances to Ukraine following a peace settlement, which will necessitate considerable military resources.
Technology represents a crucial third area for future collaboration between the EU and India, as noted by both Von der Leyen and Indian Prime Minister Modi. They aim to enhance cooperation in research and development, as well as in the production of semiconductors and 6G technology.
Since Thursday, nearly the entire European Commission has been visiting India, marking its first international trip since the new Commission was established in December.
