EU aid for laid-off workers from German tire factories

Brussels (dpa) – Nearly 1,000 employees affected by the layoffs at Goodyear in Germany will receive over three million euros in EU support for job searching. The funds from the EU Globalization Fund (EGF) will be used for initiatives such as career counseling, further training, and business start-up assistance, according to a proposal from the EU Commission. The layoffs are a result of the closure of Goodyear factories in Fulda and partially in Hanau, impacting 915 employees.

The Fulda plant is scheduled to shut down this year, with a total of 1,171 jobs lost due to the closures in both locations. Germany submitted a request for EGF support in March. Additionally, Goodyear plans to gradually halt tire production in Fürstenwalde, Brandenburg, by the end of 2027. The company cited overcapacity, low-cost imports from Asia, and inflationary pressures as reasons for the layoffs.

The Commission’s proposal requires approval from the Council of EU States and the European Parliament, which is expected to be a formality. (July 29)

Just what we need, more bureaucracy to help those poor tire workers bounce back—because nothing says “support” like a budget that rolls around slower than a flat tire on a cobbled street. 💸🚗

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we care” like throwing a few million euros at job-seekers while the factories close quicker than a pub on a Sunday. 🍻 Just what we need—more career counseling sessions instead of actual jobs! 😏

Just what we need, a few million euros to help folks find new jobs after watching their factories close faster than a German beer garden at last call. 🍻 I suppose the EU thinks a career counselor can fill the void left by a tire factory—brilliant, innit? 😏

Oh great, just what we needed—more money for job hunting while the factories pack their bags for Asia! 🍻 Hope the career counseling includes tips on how to sell pretzels on the street!

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “we care” like throwing a few million at folks losing their jobs, while we all sit back and watch the tire industry deflate like a cheap bouncy castle. 💸🤷‍♂️

Looks like the EU is rolling out the red carpet for our tireless job seekers with a fat €3M, just in time for them to think about what to do next—perhaps a career in knitting? 😂 Cheers to globalization, eh? 🍻

Oh, lovely! Just what we need—a three million euro band-aid for a tire factory that’s gone flat! 🙄 Guess it’s time for those laid-off folks to become “entrepreneurs” in the booming world of artisanal tire sculptures! 🎨🛞

Great to see the EU throwing a few euros at job seekers after they’ve been tossed out like yesterday’s tires. 🙄 I suppose it’s the thought that counts, right?
