Dutch grid operator Enexis secured €500 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for its 2026 electricity grid investment programme, focusing on expansion, reinforcement, and renewal in five Dutch provinces. The programme encompasses approximately 4,600 km of power lines and related infrastructure, crucial for adapting to the energy transition and the rise of electric vehicles. The initiative aims to accommodate increased renewable energy connection, and electrification across homes, businesses, and mobility, through investments in new cables, transformer stations, and digital grid management solutions.
EIB Vice-President Robert de Groot emphasized that enhancing grid capacity will strengthen network resilience and ensure reliable electricity access for businesses and households. Marjanne van Ittersum, CFO of Enexis, highlighted that the financing supports 2026 investments, enhancing funding flexibility and advancing towards a future-proof electricity grid. The EIB, as the EU’s climate bank, supports Europe’s grid expansion and modernization to expedite the energy transition and secure energy supply.
The EIB Group, the EU’s financing arm, undertakes significant investments in various sectors, backing over 870 projects in 2025 to align with EU policy objectives, including climate action and technological innovation. Enexis, a key regional Distribution System Operator, serves around 3 million customers in the Dutch provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Limburg, and Noord-Brabant, maintaining extensive electricity and gas networks with a workforce of over 6,600 employees.
