According to the statute of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia, the Vicar of the Patriarchal Throne convenes an expanded Council to elect a new Catholicos-Patriarch 40 days to 2 months after the Patriarch’s death. Prior to this, the Vicar gathers the Holy Synod to nominate candidates. The Synod, comprising 39 members, selects three candidates for the Council. Each member can nominate a candidate, even themselves. A candidate must secure at least 20 votes to be elected Patriarch. The three with the most votes become the Council’s candidates, where each participant can voice their opinion. Only hierarchs vote for the Catholicos-Patriarch, and a candidate needs more than half the bishops’ votes to win. If needed, a second round occurs between the top two candidates. The new Catholicos-Patriarch’s enthronement happens at the Svetitskhoveli Patriarchal Church in Mtskheta. Candidates must be a Georgian bishop of the Georgian Orthodox Church, have theological education and church governance experience, and be a monk aged 40-70. Currently, 9 Synod members are over 70.

Looks like it’s a real game of “Survivor: Holy Edition” – only the fittest bishops survive the election, and apparently, the age limit is more of a suggestion! 😂 Hope they’ve got enough candles for all that deliberation!

Seems like the election for the new Patriarch is more complex than getting a loan in a European bank! 😏 With a voting process that’s practically a holy game of musical chairs, let’s just hope the right bishop gets a good seat before the music stops! 🕺📜

So, a bunch of bishops picking a new Patriarch like it’s some exclusive game of musical chairs—brilliant! Who needs a democracy when you’ve got a council of 39? 😂
-
Just what we need, another convoluted election process where the oldest members get to decide who leads—because nothing screams progress like a bunch of septuagenarians in frocks. 🎩🤦♂️

Oh, nothing says “smooth transition” like a good old-fashioned election process where half the candidates are eligible for a senior discount. 😂 Who knew choosing a new Patriarch could rival the complexity of Brexit negotiations?

Looks like picking a new Patriarch is just like any other corporate board meeting—everyone’s got a say, but at the end of the day, it’s all about who gets the most votes. 🤷♂️ And with the age of the Synod members, I half expect bingo to be part of the selection process! 😂

A new Georgian Patriarch, eh? Can’t wait to see the surprise twist when the 70+ crowd gets involved—maybe they’ll just pass the torch to the nearest bingo winner! 😂
