DNA: A Promising Solution for Identifying Counterfeit Honey in the EU

Voels (Austria) – Established in 2018 in Voels, close to Innsbruck, Sinsoma is among the few companies employing DNA analysis to verify the authenticity of honey imported into the European Union, which is often adulterated with sugar.

Co-founder Corinna Wallinger shared with AFP, “This is truly a groundbreaking development for the honey industry,” emphasizing the importance of staying ahead of those who continuously alter their deceptive practices.

The European Union is taking the issue seriously: between 2021 and 2022, 46% of the 320 honey samples tested across 18 countries were found to be potentially fraudulent, with analyses indicating unreported sugar additions. This is a significant increase from the 14% recorded between 2015 and 2017.

Of the questionable samples, 74% originated from China, the largest honey producer globally, while 93% of honey from Turkey raised concerns. It is illegal to dilute honey with water or inexpensive syrups to increase profit margins.

In response to ongoing challenges in detection, Brussels has tasked a team of experts with the goal of “harmonizing methods” by 2028. (April 27, 2025)

Oh joy, just what we needed—a DNA test for honey! Because, you know, who doesn’t want to feel like they’re deciphering a crime scene when all they wanted was a bit of toast? 🍯😂

Oh great, just what we needed—DNA testing for honey. Because who wouldn’t want to add “beekeeping detective” to their CV? 🍯🕵️‍♂️ With half of Europe’s honey being more sugar than bee, I suppose we’ll all be buzzing about our new “authentic” sweeteners! 😂

Finally, a scientific way to tell if your honey is just a fancy sugar syrup in disguise! 🍯 Who knew we needed DNA tests for a jar of bee juice? Maybe next they’ll check if our pasta is really made from wheat or just dreams and hopes! 😂

Right, so we finally need DNA tests to figure out if our honey is sweet or just a sugar-coated lie. Can’t wait for the day we have to swipe a barcode at the corner shop to prove our honey’s not just a sticky con from the East! 🍯😂

Oh, brilliant! Finally, we can use DNA tests to find out if our honey is as sweet as the lies we tell in politics! 🍯 Because who wouldn’t want their breakfast drizzled with a side of authenticity? 😂

Oh, fantastic! Just what we needed—DNA testing for honey. Because who doesn’t want to pay top euro for a jar of “pure” honey that might be more sugar than bee? 🍯😂 Let’s hope the bees have good alibis!

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says “authenticity” like DNA testing for our sweet, sticky gold. Next, they’ll be sending our honey to medical school just to get a degree in honesty! 😂🍯

Honestly, who knew we’d need Sherlock Holmes for our honey? 🍯 I suppose the bees are buzzing about a new career as detectives now! 😂

Looks like we’ve finally found a way to tell the difference between real honey and that sugar syrup masquerading as the sweet stuff. 🍯 Next up, maybe they can use DNA to figure out why my last taxi ride cost me an arm and a leg! 😜

Imagine a world where your honey doesn’t come with a side of sugar syrup and deceit! 🍯💔 Finally, the EU is buzzing into action – because who knew that “100% pure honey” could be such a slippery slope? 🚜💨

So, we’re finally using DNA to catch the culprits behind dodgy honey? Brilliant, just what I needed to justify my morning tea! 🍵😂 Next, we’ll be DNA-testing the croissants for authenticity—can’t have any of that “au naturel” business ruining our breakfast, can we? 🥐

Oh great, now we can finally enjoy our honey without wondering if it’s been sweetened with a dash of sugar and a sprinkle of deceit. Just what the EU needed—more expensive lab tests to prove that our breakfast toast isn’t secretly a sugar bomb! 🍯😅
