Vilvoorde (Eurotoday) – Viviane Willems, a resident of Brembosstraat in Vilvoorde, is concerned about the road’s poor condition, including potholes. Alderman Katrien Vaes acknowledges the issue, citing a delayed sewer project and lack of funds, with a plan for repairs in 2026-2031.
Residents of Brembosstraat in Vilvoorde are worried about their road. A local, Viviane Willems, describes the road as being very bumpy with a lot of potholes. She said that potholes get filled up with water during rainy days and it is very hard to ride on for cyclists. Viviane has noticed several accidents, including a recent one involving a 15-year-old boy who fell off his bicycle. She helped him and treated his injuries.
Viviane Willems mentioned that the number of accidents has raised safety concerns. She has also fallen while cycling to her neighbour’s house. Now, she does not ride her bike on that road anymore. She is frustrated because the poor road conditions are dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians.
Will Vilvoorde fix Brembosstraat’s dangerous road before 2026?
According to Viviane Willems, the bad road on Brembosstraat is affecting local businesses. Viviane owns a decoration shop there. She says cars do not want to drive into the street because of the bumps and potholes.
Viviane is worried that the unsafe road is keeping people away from her store. She mentioned that there has been no clear plan to fix the road, and this problem affects both residents and shop owners.
“Cars don’t dare to drive into the street either, because the road scares my customers away from coming to my decoration shop.”
Says Viviane.
Viviane has contacted the local government many times, but they say fixing the road is not a priority due to a lack of funds. She mentioned that this makes her very frustrated. She feels sad that no one is taking care of the street. The road remains in poor condition, and she worries about the safety of everyone who uses it.
Katrien Vaes, the Alderman for Public Works, admits that Brembosstraat is in bad condition. She explains that Vilvoorde faces many challenges. The street is part of a sewer project that was planned eight years ago, originally estimated to cost over a million euros.
According to Katrien Vaes, the local government did not receive funding for this project because Vilvoorde has a high sewer level. Currently, they are prioritizing fixing problems in rural areas first. Because of this, the repairs for Brembosstraat have been delayed.
“The street is part of a sewerage project for which we submitted a preliminary design 8 years ago.”
Katrien Vaes (Open VLD CD&V)
In 2019, the Vilvoorde government took steps to make Brembosstraat safer. They replaced the cobblestones in two dangerous areas with asphalt. Katrien Vaes said this helped somewhat, but the street is still not in good condition. She added that a complete plan to fix Brembosstraat will be discussed in the upcoming plan for 2026-2031.
“That has improved the situation somewhat, but the street is certainly not yet optimal.”
Says Vaes.
According to Katrien Vaes, the multi-year plan will outline the Vilvoorde government’s priorities for fixing roads and their budget. This plan will determine how and when Brembosstraat will be completely renovated. She mentioned that the goal is to address the street’s problems and make it safe for residents and visitors.

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “welcome to Vilvoorde” like a game of pothole dodgeball on Brembosstraat. Who needs thrill rides at the amusement park when you can risk life and limb just to buy a decoration? 🎢🚴♂️
