Costa Reflects on Portugal’s Political History to Advocate for a United Europe at the European Council

António Costa, the newly elected president of the European Council, reflected on his political journey in Lisbon and the Portuguese Government, emphasizing the need for a “common Europe” that focuses on security, economic development, and enhanced diplomatic presence.
“Having served as the mayor of Lisbon fills me with pride, as does my time as the Prime Minister of Portugal. Now, as I take on the role of President of the European Council, I am honored to serve the European Union (EU). Lisbon is my city, Portugal is my homeland, and Europe is our shared home—there’s no conflict among these three identities,” Costa stated.
At the handover ceremony in Brussels, where he succeeded Charles Michel as president, the former Portuguese prime minister asserted, “In today’s globalized world, true patriotism and the safeguarding of our sovereignty can only be achieved through the creation of a united Europe.”
He further emphasized that “only by standing together can we protect our security, maintain stability and peace on our continent, foster shared prosperity, drive economic growth, and engage in climate transition. Only together can we amplify Europe’s voice on the global stage—unity is the essence of the European Union.”
António Costa will formally begin his role as President of the European Council on Sunday, leading the institution that consists of the heads of government and state of the EU, responsible for setting political direction and priorities.
The outgoing president, Charles Michel, expressed confidence in Costa’s ability to succeed in this demanding position, highlighting his “sensitivity and experience” as essential qualities for the role.

So, we’ve gone from a mayor of Lisbon to the head honcho of the EU—next stop, world domination, eh? 🤔 At this rate, I half expect him to start advocating for a united Europe with a side of pastel de nata! 🍮

Oh great, another politician waxing lyrical about “common Europe” while we all know the only thing we really have in common is our love for a good espresso and the occasional bureaucratic headache! ☕️💼 Just what we needed—more talk and less action, right? 🙄

So, we’ve gone from “Lisbon, my love” to “Europe, my bloc” in record time, eh? Can’t wait to see how a united Europe tackles those pesky sovereignty issues—maybe with a nice cup of café and a side of bureaucracy? ☕️🇪🇺
