Porto – Today, the President of the European Council, António Costa, emphasized that affordable housing is one of the “most urgent” challenges facing Member States, reflecting a widespread concern across all European societies.
“Affordable housing has become one of the most urgent challenges in the Member States and is absolutely essential for ensuring social cohesion and the sustainability of democracies in Europe,” Costa stated at the Porto 2025 Social Forum.
He pointed out that nothing exacerbates populism more than feelings of neglect and the uncertainty that younger generations face when searching for their first home.
Costa described housing as a critical issue for all European societies, noting that no European government can ignore the housing crisis.
“The Portuguese government is, in fact, a good example,” he remarked, highlighting the presence of Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro alongside him.
In light of these concerns, Costa announced that the upcoming formal meeting of the European Council in October will feature a debate focused on affordable housing.
He reminded attendees that there is already a commissioner within the European Commission dedicated to housing.
The Porto 2025 Social Forum, which commenced on Thursday and concludes today, centers on the theme “Quality Jobs in a Competitive Social Europe” and is organized by the Portuguese Government with support from the European Commission. (19/09/25)
