Commission Urges Member States to Implement EU Age Verification App

The EU has moved to protect children from harmful and inappropriate online content.

On Wednesday, the EU Commission adopted a recommendation urging Member States to accelerate the rollout of the EU age verification app and make it available by the end of the year.

The “secure, safe, and privacy-preserving” EU age verification app is, says the EU, a “key step” in protecting children from harmful and inappropriate online content.

The Member States can roll-out the EU age verification as a standalone app or integrate it into a European digital ID wallet.

The recommendation also specifies the actions that Member States should take to ensure the swift availability and interoperability of the EU age verification solution.

The Commission has come up with a bluepint for the app. which  enables users to prove they meet a required age threshold without revealing their exact age, identity or any other personal details.

It is now for the Member States to customise and produce the app for their citizens.

An EC source  said that protecting kids online is a priority for the Commission.

“Under the Act platforms must ensure a high level of privacy, security and safety for minors online.”

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy welcomed the move.

“Effective and privacy-preserving age verification is the next piece of the puzzle that we are getting closer to completing, as we work towards an online space where our children are safe and empowered to use positively and responsibly without restricting the rights of adults.”

Guess we’re finally getting an app that’s supposed to keep kids safe online—because nothing screams “secure” like a government app! 🙄 Let’s just hope it’s more user-friendly than those passport photo booths in the train station, eh?

Oh sure, because what every child really needs is another app to remind them they’re not old enough for the internet! Just what we need, a digital babysitter by Brussels – brilliant! 😏

Blimey, an EU app to verify ages? Just what we needed—another tech marvel to make sure the kids can’t sneak a peek at the internet while the adults debate who’s buying the next round. 🍻

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—a fancy app to remind us that kids are supposed to be kids, not mini digital citizens. 😅 Maybe next they’ll create an app to teach politicians how to read the room!

Looks like the EU’s finally found the magic app to keep our little ones safe online – who knew all it took was a digital ID and a sprinkle of bureaucracy? 🍻 Just what we needed, another gadget to remind us that privacy is dead but at least the kids are safer… sort of. 😏

Nothing screams “we care about kids” like a shiny new app that’ll probably need three updates just to tell if someone’s old enough for a 12+ game. Can’t wait for the Member States to customize it with their own special sauce of bureaucracy! 😂

Seems like the EU’s got it all figured out – just slap an app on it and voilà, the kids are safe! 😂 Who needs real solutions when you have tech, right?

Looks like the EU’s finally figured out a way to keep the kids safe online—because nothing screams “security” quite like a fancy app that tells you to be careful while scrolling through the latest cat memes. 😂 Can’t wait for the day when we can age-verifiy faster than we can find our socks on laundry day!
