Commission Supports Costa’s Plan to Bypass Hungary’s Veto on Ukraine’s EU Bid

Costa’s plan maintains the need for unanimity to approve a country’s final accession, keeping the collective authority of EU nations intact. However, lowering the threshold to start talks could facilitate progress and reduce frustration in Kyiv and Chișinău.

This move would enable candidate countries, like Ukraine and Moldova, to initiate reforms to align with EU standards, even if a few members are against starting negotiations.

EU diplomats view Costa’s proposal as a way to bypass consistent obstruction from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whose veto has impeded Ukraine and Moldova’s advancement.

“When a country is hindered without valid reasons, despite meeting the criteria, it jeopardizes the credibility of the entire enlargement process,” stated Mercier.

The Commission supports efforts to accelerate the process but emphasizes that the decision to advance EU membership talks rests with member countries.

“It’s ultimately for the member states to decide the next steps, and we hope to open cluster one as soon as possible,” Mercier added.

Looks like Costa’s found a cheeky workaround to Hungary’s stubbornness—who knew EU negotiations were like herding cats? 🐱💼 With all this back-and-forth, we might as well throw a party and call it “Diplomacy: The Comedy Show!” 🍻

  2. Costa’s genius plan is like trying to squeeze into a packed metro during rush hour—brilliant in theory, but good luck navigating the human obstacles! 🚇💼

So, let me get this straight: we’re playing a game of “who can ignore Hungary’s tantrums the longest?” Brilliant strategy, really. 🥴 Just what the EU needed—more bureaucracy with a side of diplomacy! 💼

Looks like Costa’s got the magic wand to make Hungary’s veto disappear—who knew diplomacy was just a game of “let’s pretend”? 🍷 Meanwhile, I’ll be over here waiting for the rest of Europe to join this fairy tale.

Looks like Costa’s got a neat little workaround for Hungary’s veto, eh? Who knew diplomacy could be as easy as dodging traffic in Budapest? 🚗💨

Looks like Costa’s cooking up a way to sneak Ukraine into the EU while Hungary’s playing the stubborn toddler in the corner. Bet Orbán’s thrilled to see his veto getting a backseat ride! 😂🍷

  7. Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—a plan to dance around Hungary’s veto like it’s a waltz at a Viennese ball. 🙄 Who knew EU politics could be so… creative?

Typical EU – always finding a way to play musical chairs while Hungary sits firmly in the corner with its veto like a moody teenager. 🤷‍♂️ Let’s just hope they don’t trip over one another while trying to get Ukraine in the club! 🍻

  9. Funny how one man’s veto can turn a continental decision into a game of musical chairs. 🎶 Let’s hope Costa’s plan doesn’t require a PhD in diplomacy just to get started! 😂
