Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday claimed that intelligence from Ukraine’s security services indicates China has been covertly supplying weapons to Russia, including gunpowder and artillery.
“It’s not entirely unexpected,” Zelenskyy said. “But I spoke with the Chinese leader, and he assured me that China would not provide weapons to Russia. Unfortunately, we now have evidence suggesting otherwise.”
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, China has maintained close political and economic relations with Moscow. These ties have grown to include an increase in bilateral trade, joint military exercises, and greater diplomatic alignment through forums such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS.
China has previously faced accusations of aiding Russia’s military efforts, including covertly supplying weapons and materials used in drone production. At the same time, Beijing has reportedly scaled back its drone exports to Ukraine. Earlier this month, Ukrainian forces reported the capture of two Chinese nationals fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.
Despite ongoing allegations, the Chinese government continues to deny any involvement in the conflict and maintains that it remains a neutral actor in the war.
