‘Children Are Freezing to Death’: Heartbreaking Reports from Gaza

Children Freezing to Death: Stark Humanitarian Updates from Gaza

In a tragic escalation of suffering, eight newborns have succumbed to hypothermia in Gaza within the past month, while 74 children have died amid the 2025 winter’s unforgiving conditions.

Louise Wateridge of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, expressed deep despair to UN News: “We enter this New Year carrying the same horrors as the last – there’s been no progress and no solace. Children are now freezing to death.”

Meanwhile, violence continues to ravage the region. Operations by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have resulted in mass casualties and widespread destruction, while rocket fire from Palestinian armed groups into Israel persists, threatening civilian lives on both sides.

“The Secretary-General again strongly condemns the widespread killing of – and injury to – civilians in this conflict,” said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a Thursday briefing.

Hunger Crisis Worsens

The already dire hunger crisis in Gaza is deepening, as the region grapples with critical shortages of supplies, severe access restrictions, and violent looting.

According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN humanitarian partners in Central and Southern Gaza have completely depleted supplies in their warehouses as of Sunday.

Efforts to bring in food aid have been severely hindered, with Israeli authorities continuing to block most requests to transport assistance from the Erez West crossing to areas south of Wadi Gaza. An estimated 120,000 metric tonnes of food—sufficient to feed the entire Gaza population for over three months—remains stranded outside the region.

Without additional supplies, the distribution of food parcels to starving families is expected to remain critically limited. Moreover, over 50 community kitchens, currently providing 200,000 meals daily to residents in central and southern Gaza, face the threat of imminent shutdowns due to dwindling resources.

Impossible Choices

The humanitarian crisis has led to profoundly difficult decisions for aid workers. The World Food Programme (WFP) reports that only five out of 20 bakeries it supports remain operational in Gaza, all located within the Gaza governorate. These bakeries are entirely reliant on fuel deliveries from the south, which have been severely restricted.

Fuel shortages are also crippling Gaza’s health system, leaving hospitals unable to power generators. This has put the lives of countless patients at risk, leaving medical workers and aid organizations with heartbreaking choices.

Dire Conditions in North Gaza

In North Gaza, where hostilities remain intense, conditions are especially critical. Humanitarian aid workers face severe movement restrictions, while ongoing attacks have all but paralyzed healthcare services for those trapped in the region.

Al Awda Hospital in Jabalya—the only remaining partially functioning hospital in North Gaza—has limited access and resources. Efforts by UN agencies to provide support have been obstructed. Out of 15 recent humanitarian missions across Gaza, Israeli authorities facilitated just five, while others were impeded, denied, or canceled due to security and logistical concerns.

“In Gaza, parents and children remain missing beneath rubble, separated or detained – their fates unanswered. Hope is silenced, and the brutal war rages on,” said Ms. Wateridge, painting a harrowing picture of life in Gaza.

Searching for a Path Forward

Despite the overwhelming challenges, the UN and its partners continue their efforts to deliver essential aid to Gaza. Between 22 December 2024 and 8 January 2025, approximately 560,000 people received primary and secondary healthcare services.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated calls for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law. “Civilians must be protected and respected at all times, and their essential needs must be met,” said his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

An immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza were also firmly demanded by the Secretary-General as part of efforts to prevent further loss of life.

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza underscores the urgent need for peaceful resolution and intensified global efforts to address the suffering of civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict.
