Cairo (Eurotoday) – Egypt has announced that Cairo will host an emergency Arab summit on February 27 to address the latest developments concerning the Palestinian issue and the Gaza Strip, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The summit comes amid growing regional and global criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump‘s proposal to “take over the Gaza Strip” from Israel and transform it into a “Riviera of the Middle East” by relocating Palestinians elsewhere.
The blank”>decision to hold the meeting followed high-level discussions between Egypt and several Arab nations, including Palestine, which requested the summit. Coordination was carried out with Bahrain, the current chair of the Arab League (AL) summit, and the AL secretariat, according to the statement.
What does Trump mean by ‘Riviera of the Middle East’?
Recently, President Donald Trump made controversial remarks regarding the Gaza Strip, sparking widespread concern. He suggested that once the conflict subsides, the United States could assume control of Gaza, with Israel handing it over to the U.S.
Trump envisioned redeveloping Gaza into “the Riviera of the Middle East,” proposing major reconstruction efforts. His plan involves temporarily relocating Palestinians from Gaza to other countries during the rebuilding phase.
What are the key takeaways from Egypt’s previous Gaza summit?
The last summit Egypt hosted concerning Gaza was the Cairo Peace Summit on October 21, 2023. The conference aimed to explore ways to de-escalate the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the region. It focused on strategies for reducing hostilities and implementing humanitarian aid through the Rafah crossing.
Several regional and international leaders attended the summit in an effort to contain the Gaza crisis. Although this summit did not solely focus on Gaza but rather addressed broader Palestinian concerns, it underscored Egypt’s role under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in mediating peace efforts in the region.
