PARIS — Macron Annonces Budget Plans Following Barnier Government Censure
The day after the censure of the Barnier government, French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled plans for a revised budgetary timeline on Thursday.
In a televised address, Macron stated his intention to appoint a new Prime Minister “in the coming days,” with the “priority focused on the budget.”
Macron outlined the need for a “special law” to be submitted to Parliament “before mid-December,” which would implement the 2024 budgetary decisions for 2025. This measure is deemed crucial to ensure the functionality of public services.
Looking ahead, the President indicated that the government would draft “a new budget” at the start of the year. The aim is to “shield the French people from automatic tax increases caused by inflation” and to provide the means for the country to invest in key sectors, including the military, judicial system, law enforcement, support for farmers, and assistance for New Caledonia.
Additionally, Macron emphasized the importance of political inclusivity, tasking the incoming Prime Minister with forming “a government of national interest.” This coalition would seek to unite various political forces “within a governance framework” willing to support—or at least refrain from opposing—the administration.
The President’s proposals come amid a politically charged atmosphere, underlining the urgency of stabilizing governance and addressing pressing fiscal challenges.
