Bruges Expands Bike Zone to 87 km Under Mayor Dirk De Fauw’s Leadership

Bruges (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Starting October 1, 2025, Bruges will expand its bicycle zone to 87 km, giving cyclists priority. Mayor Dirk De Fauw intends to enhance safety, slow down car speeds, and induce sustainable urban mobility.

According to VRT News, from October 1st 2025 on, Bruges will expand its city centre bicycle zone. Cyclists will get priority in these zones over all other vehicles. Cars, buses, and delivery trucks have to slow to a maximum of 30 km/h and keep behind bicycles. The expansion will increase the total length of bicycle streets in the city to 87 kilometres.

Mayor Dirk De Fauw (CD&V):

“That’s the highest number of kilometres of bicycle streets in all of Belgium. We’re making Bruges even more the cycling city it already is. There are already many bicycle streets not only in the city center, but also in the surrounding districts. The safety of our cyclists is very important.”

What streets are included in Bruges’ expanded 87 km city centre bicycle zone?

Bruges will bar some streets from the proposed extension of its city centre cycling zone. This is necessary to maintain access to the city centre and make public transport smooth, according to officials.

The city wishes to have safer cycling while keeping cars, buses, and emergency vehicles moving. Officials emphasise that intelligent planning is required to safeguard cyclists without hindering principal routes for citizens, tourists, and deliveries.

The streets that will not be part of the expanded bicycle network include:

  • Ezelstraat
  • Langestraat
  • Gentpoortstraat
  • Katelijnestraat-Mariastraat
  • Vlamingdam
  • Sint-Jorisstraat
  • Walweinstraat – Julius
  • Maurits Sabbestraat
  • Langerei
  • Kazernevest
  • Predikherenrei,
  • Gruuthusestraat – Diver – Rozenhoedkaai – Braambergstraat – Predikherenstraat.

City officials say this plan ensures the historic city centre stays cyclist-friendly, safe, and fully accessible.

In Ghent, a new traffic plan in 2017 reduced car access in the city centre and expanded bicycle zones. Antwerp has introduced bicycle streets and low-traffic zones where cars must reduce speed and yield to cyclists. Leuven and Mechelen have also prioritised streets for cyclists to improve safety and traffic flow.

Right, because what Bruges really needed was even more cyclists taking over the streets! 🚴‍♂️ I can’t wait to see how we’ll manage to squeeze in a car or two—maybe we’ll just install bike racks on top of them!

Brilliant move, Mayor De Fauw! Because who doesn’t love dodging tourists on bicycles while trying to deliver a pizza at 30 km/h? 🚴‍♂️🍕 #BikeLife #BrugesBallet

87 km of bike lanes? Brilliant! Because clearly, the solution to all urban woes is to let cyclists take over the roads while the rest of us play a game of ‘dodge the cyclist’ at 30 km/h. 🚴‍♂️💨

Brilliant, just what we needed—87 km of bike lane to ensure that the only thing slower than a Bruges traffic jam is a cyclist on a Sunday stroll. 🚴‍♂️💨 Let’s just hope the tourists can still find the historical sites between all the pedal-pushing!

Brilliant move by Mayor De Fauw! Who needs cars in Bruges anyway? Just wait till our tourists try to figure out how to pedal while dodging horse-drawn carriages. 🚴‍♂️💨

  6. Cycling in Bruges? Brilliant idea, just what we need – more bicycles and less of that pesky car traffic. 🙄 Can’t wait to see all the tourists trying to navigate the “safety” on two wheels. 🚴‍♂️

So, Bruges is turning into a cyclist’s utopia, eh? Can’t wait for the next tourist season when the locals will be dodging bikes instead of cars—it’s like a game of human pinball! 😂🚴‍♂️

Can’t wait to see the mayor’s face when he realizes that cyclists don’t know how to ride in a straight line! 🚴‍♂️💨 87 km of blissful chaos awaits, and I’m sure the cars are just thrilled to take it easy behind them. 😂

Bruges, the new cycling capital of Belgium—because who needs cars when you can dodge tourists on a bike? 🚴‍♂️ Just what we needed, an extra 87 km of “bike haven” for the cyclists to show off their spandex. 🥴

So, Bruges is extending its bike zone to 87 km—because who needs cars anyway, right? 🚴‍♂️ Let’s just hope the cyclists can dodge the tourists and deliveries while they’re at it! 😂

Why European human rights violations still matter
A government might sign every significant convention and advocate for dignity and the rule of law yet still allow abuses at its borders, in prisons, through digital systems, and in the treatment of minorities. Hence, European human rights violations remain a pressing political issue rather than just a historical one. Across Europe, the concern is
