Dame Karen Pierce has been appointed to a new role following five years as the U.K.’s representative in Washington. She has been succeeded by former Labour Cabinet minister Peter Mandelson, marking the first time in over 50 years that a non-career diplomat has taken on the position.
A Strategic Appointment
Announcing the decision, Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the importance of the Western Balkans to the U.K. and highlighted the country’s commitment to addressing irregular migration.
“The Western Balkans is of long-standing importance to the U.K., and our partnerships in the region are central to our efforts to tackle irregular migration and bear down on the evil trade in human lives,” Lammy stated.
He further praised Dame Karen Pierce, citing her extensive diplomatic experience as a key asset for the role. Previously, Pierce has served as the U.K.'s permanent representative to the U.N. and as Britain’s ambassador to Afghanistan.
Government Focus on the Balkans
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has prioritized engagement in the Balkans as part of his administration’s efforts to combat illegal migration. In November, the U.K. strengthened ties with Serbia, North Macedonia, and Kosovo by signing agreements aimed at tackling organized immigration crime.
