A proposed strategy for the Greens involves leveraging tactical voting rather than establishing a formal alliance with Labour. Green officials are considering focusing resources locally to support the strongest progressive candidate, similar to past collaborations with Labour and the Liberal Democrats.
Meanwhile, Green advisers are interested in the internal conflicts within Labour regarding leadership changes, as many Green supporters find Starmer as unappealing as Conservative leader Badenoch, according to a YouGov survey.
A senior Green official believes there is no benefit to collaborating electorally with Labour while Starmer leads, anticipating a leadership change. Polanski has expressed support for Andy Burnham, the Labour mayor of Greater Manchester, as a potential candidate to challenge Starmer.
Labour has dismissed the idea of collaboration, emphasizing their focus on governance, according to a senior government adviser. They predict that Polanski’s popularity will drop under increased scrutiny of his political stances and past comments, including controversial remarks as a hypnotherapist in 2013.
The adviser noted that Polanski’s hypnotherapy background is poorly received in focus groups.
