Skopje – The expansion of the European Union to include the Western Balkan nations remains a key focus during Poland’s presidency of the EU Council, which commenced at the start of this month. In an interview with “360 Degrees,” Mariusz Brimora, the chargé d’affaires of the Polish ambassador in North Macedonia, expressed that Poland has not overlooked the Balkans in its agenda. He affirmed that Poland will continue to enhance efforts to expedite the region’s accession to the Union.
Addressing the stalled Euro-integration process for North Macedonia, Brimora indicated that the Polish presidency will actively work to break the impasse. He revealed that representatives from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will soon travel to Sofia to discuss the situation concerning North Macedonia, among other topics.
On the matter of the “deadlock” facing the country, Brimora pointed out that it is entirely a bilateral issue that should be resolved by the nations involved. He noted that while other EU member states can assist in fostering a solution aimed at reaching a compromise, the onus is ultimately on the parties to engage in dialogue. “It depends on you to start conversing and agree on a compromise,” he stated, adding that the primary responsibility of the Government in Skopje is to initiate discussions and quickly reach a conclusion that is acceptable to both sides.
Regarding the proposed constitutional changes with delayed implementation, Brimora mentioned that some of the Government’s allies suggest this could be feasible. However, he cautioned that there is currently no sign that either Brussels or Bulgaria would alter their stance.
“I am uncertain whether this proposal would be effective. The new EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has made it clear that she expects Macedonia to implement the constitutional changes. This situation aligns with the old Latin principle in international law – pacta sunt servanda, which means agreements must be upheld,” Brimora emphasized. (January 17)
