For twenty years, the International Film Festival for Human Rights has been a unique event in Albania, uniting filmmakers, activists, students, and audiences from across the nation and beyond to engage with significant human rights issues through film.
The European Union played a pivotal role in supporting this milestone edition, affirming its commitment to Albania’s path toward democracy, equality, and inclusion.
This year’s festival theme was “Human Rights in the Digital Age,” which showcased the benefits and challenges posed by the digital realm.
The festival opened with the film The Boy in Pink Pants by Margherita Ferri, telling the poignant story of Andrea Spezzacatena, a young person who faced the harsh realities of verbal and online bullying, highlighting the necessity of safeguarding human dignity both online and offline.
Over five days, attendees were treated to a series of films, discussions, and events aimed at challenging stereotypes, igniting conversations, and fostering a culture of human rights, all offered free of charge.
Among the featured events was the screening of the documentary “EUkrainian” by Swedish filmmaker Victor Nordenshold, which portrays life in Ukraine four years after the onset of Russian aggression.
This documentary was presented at the Presidency of the Assembly of Albania, in partnership with the Embassy of Ukraine in Albania, with participation from embassy representatives, diplomats, artists, and festival organizers.
During her opening remarks, Deputy Speaker of the Assembly of Albania, Klodiana Spahiu, stressed that the war in Ukraine exemplifies the violation of peace, sovereignty, and human dignity.
On behalf of the Ukrainian Embassy in Albania, Yuliia Gorokhovska conveyed greetings from Ambassador Volodymyr Shkurov, who expressed gratitude to the Albanian people and institutions for their steadfast support.
Earlier, guests were able to explore an exhibition by a Ukrainian artist titled “Carved Memory: Myths and Heroes Between Two Worlds.” (September 18)
