A submarine fiber optic cable linking Latvia and Sweden sustained damage on Sunday, with initial assessments suggesting it resulted from “external influence,” according to Latvian public broadcaster LSM. The report cited both the cable operator and the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre (LVRTC) as sources.
The Latvian navy dispatched a patrol to investigate a vessel suspected of involvement in the incident and is coordinating with NATO allies, LSM noted. Additionally, two other ships present in the vicinity during the time of the damage are under scrutiny.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, following an emergency government meeting, said, “We have determined that there is most likely external damage and that it is significant,” Reuters reported.
