Denmark, which oversees Greenland and the Faroe Islands as part of its kingdom, is facing growing pressure to enhance its Arctic security and maintain regional stability. This comes amid controversial remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who sparked global headlines with bold suggestions of potentially using military action to acquire Greenland, the planet’s largest island.
Participants at a recent summit included Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, and Faroese leader Aksel Johannesen.
During the discussion, Faroese politician Høgni Hoydal directly criticized Copenhagen, accusing it of treating the Faroe Islands and Greenland as mere “chess pieces” in its geopolitical strategy.
“Not to be rude,” Hoydal stated, “Denmark has used the Faroe Islands and Greenland in its relationship with NATO and the U.S. like chess pieces.” He suggested that Denmark leverages these territories’ strategic Arctic importance to gain geopolitical advantages.
However, Hoydal concluded with a pointed remark about Indigenous agency, declaring, “But if we are going to be used as chess pieces, it is up to us how we move on the chessboard.”
