Hasselt (Eurotoday): On Wednesday morning, a fire in a Hasselt apartment building evacuated 19 residents. Local police, including Stephanie Bikkembergs, praised emergency responders. Fourteen residents found temporary shelter while the fire’s investigation was going on.
On 27 November, a fire started in the basement of an apartment building in Hasselt, causing heavy smoke that required a quick evacuation. The smoke also affected a nearby building. Emergency services evacuated 19 out of 21 residents, while two were on vacation. The evacuation was handled carefully to ensure everyone’s safety. Stephanie Bikkembergs from the local police praised the emergency responders for their efficient efforts in managing the situation.
What caused the fire that evacuated residents in Hasselt?
After the fire, 14 evacuated residents found temporary shelter at a nearby catering establishment that offered assistance. The city of Hasselt announced plans to provide support later in the day to help residents cope with the trauma of the incident, showing its commitment to citizen well-being during emergencies. No injuries were reported, but the situation has affected the residents, who are now waiting for updates. Authorities have also started an investigation into the cause of the fire to prevent similar events in the future.
The police are still unsure what caused the fire, and a fire expert will arrive around eight o’clock to check it out. There’s not much damage outside, but inside there is a lot of smoke and water damage. It’s unclear when residents can return home, and the shops below will stay closed for now. The police are asking people to avoid the area around Truierbrug because the road is closed for emergency services.
