On Saturday night, around 10 p.m., anti-government protesters clashed with supporters of Vučić, as reported by Reuters. Police in riot gear were stationed around key locations such as government buildings, parliament, and Pionirski Park. Protesters hurled bottles, rocks, and flares at officers, prompting police to use force to break up the gatherings in various parts of Belgrade’s center.
President Vučić expressed on Instagram that “you cannot defeat Serbia with violence” and praised the police for their “patriotic, serious approach” to manage the situation while using minimal force.
Interior Minister Ivica Dačić stated on Sunday in Belgrade that nearly 50 officers and over 20 civilians sustained injuries, Bloomberg reported. He condemned the violence and assured that “police will take all measures to restore public order and peace and will repel all attacks.” Of the 77 protesters arrested, 38 remained in custody facing charges.
Protesting students blamed the government for heightening tensions, saying authorities chose “violence and repression against the people.” They stated that any increase in situation radicalization is “their responsibility.”
