Madrid – Foreign Affairs Minister José Manuel Albares has stated that Europe must “take a leap in its sovereignty” in response to the criticisms of the European Union in the new U.S. security strategy, emphasizing that “We Europeans are the ones who must defend Europe’s integrity.”
This assertion was made during his appearance in Congress on Wednesday, where he was present at his own request to discuss Spain’s foreign policy, as well as in response to requests from EH Bildu, ERC, and BNG regarding Spain’s stance on the Sahara issue and the establishment of two migrant reception centers in Nigeria.
Albares emphasized the need to advance European sovereignty and noted that neither the PP nor Vox mentioned Europe or its security strategy in their addresses, nor did they address the situations in Gaza or Ukraine, both of which the minister highlighted to reaffirm Spain’s support for Palestine and Ukraine.
Additionally, regarding the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who was unable to attend the ceremony in Oslo, he expressed that he believes the award is “fine” but criticized the conservatives for attempting to import Venezuela’s divisions into Spain.
Albares mentioned Machado after PP and Vox once again criticized him for not congratulating her. (December 10)
