AIDO Global Convention Urges Immediate Action to End Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

Global leaders, royalty, and human rights advocates convene in London to unite against trafficking and exploitation

LONDON — A resonant call to dismantle the systems supporting modern slavery and human trafficking echoed in Croydon as AIDO Network International wrapped up its 7th Annual International Convention. The four-day event, themed “Breaking Bridges to Combat Modern-Day Slavery and Stop Human Trafficking Worldwide”, in collaboration with the Stop Trafficking movement, attracted participants from around the world — including royals, cultural leaders, policy experts, and survivors — united for one cause: restoring freedom and dignity to humanity.

A Journey Through History and Hope

The conference commenced on 5th September with a keynote speech by Chief Dr. Ben Israel Yoesghaft, on behalf of HE Amb. Irenoe Namboka, followed by a memorable address from HRH Queen Achom II (Dr. Hilary Brown) of CARICOM. Her poignant recounting of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its connections to modern trafficking deeply moved the audience.

Panels That Sparked Change

The first panel featured prominent speakers like Chief Eric Phillips Siphosezulu, Dr. Myrna Belgrave Achom V, and Queen Mother Violet Smith, focusing on reparations, historical justice, and modern exploitation.

The second human rights panel, chaired by Mr. Martin Weightman, AIDO’s Director of Human Rights, in conjunction with Stop Trafficking representatives and the UK Home Office, addressed the core issues, highlighting community relations and potential solutions.

The Stop Trafficking team, led by Dr. Sheik Ramzy (Oxford), Keith Best (former MP), and Dr. Nicola Garrington, examined the UK’s current situation and the hidden breadth of modern-day slavery globally, proposing actionable solutions. The Home Office representatives outlined the government’s strategy and emphasized the importance of collaboration and engagement with diverse groups for improvements.

Isn’t it charming how global leaders gather in London to discuss modern slavery while conveniently ignoring the real-life exploitation happening right under their noses? I guess “breaking bridges” sounds better than “let’s actually do something about it,” eh? 😏
