Brussels – In 2024, the value of agricultural production in the European Union (EU) reached 531.9 billion euros at basic prices, reflecting a 0.9% decline from 2023, as reported by Eurostat on Friday. This marks the second consecutive year of a “slight decline” in this indicator.
Eurostat explained that the nominal value changes were driven by a 1% increase in production volume, counterbalanced by a 1.8% decrease in the nominal prices of agricultural products and services.
The countries with the highest agricultural production values last year were France (88.3 billion euros), Germany (75.5 billion), Italy (70.2 billion), and Spain (68.7 billion). They were followed by the Netherlands (41.3 billion euros), Poland (39.5 billion), and Romania (20.2 billion). These seven countries accounted for 75.9% of the EU’s estimated agricultural production value.
In 2024, fifteen member states reported higher agricultural production values than in 2023, with the most significant increases seen in Ireland (8.9% more), Croatia (8.8%), and Sweden (5%). Conversely, notable declines were recorded in France (9% less), Romania (8.5%), and Bulgaria (8%).
Crops comprised half (50.3%) of the overall agricultural production value in the Twenty-Seven, totaling 267.7 billion euros, while animals and animal products contributed over two-fifths (41.1%) with 218.8 billion euros. The remainder stemmed from agricultural services and secondary activities.
In 2024, the costs of agricultural inputs in the EU unrelated to investment (intermediate consumption) decreased by 3.7% compared to 2023, totaling 303.3 billion euros. These changes in agricultural production value and intermediate consumption led to a 3.1% increase in the gross value added from agriculture, reaching 228.6 billion euros.
