Afghanistan Begins Exporting Fruit to Russia

Afghanistan has sent its inaugural shipment of apples and pomegranates to Russia, according to The Times of India. This initial export signifies Kabul’s intent to enhance trade relations, including exporting spices, carpets, and other goods to Russia. Afghanistan aims to boost trade with Iran, India, and Central Asian nations due to decreased trade with Pakistan after the border closure following armed conflicts in October. Recently, exports to Iran and Turkmenistan rose by 60-70%, while trade with Pakistan, which made up 45% of Afghanistan’s foreign trade in 2024, has nearly ceased. In May, Alhaj Nuruddin Azizi, Afghanistan’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, highlighted Russia as a key trade partner and noted the potential for exporting fruits, spices, and carpets to Russia.
