“This is the most serious attack on the nation’s critical infrastructure since the end of the conflict,” Kosovo’s Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla stated during a press briefing Saturday evening.
Authorities revealed that approximately 20 kilograms of explosives, concealed in a black bag, were placed along a section of the aqueduct in Zubin Potok and detonated using a wired device.
“This was not a random act; it was a deliberate and carefully executed operation by a professional group … designed to inflict maximum damage on Kosovo and its citizens,” Sveçla emphasized.
Police have detained eight individuals suspected of orchestrating and executing the attack.
The incident underscores persistent instability in Kosovo, widely regarded as the most volatile region in the Balkans. Tensions remain high between Kosovo, which declared independence in 2008, and neighboring Serbia.
Notably, in September of last year, armed clashes broke out in the same region where Friday’s explosion occurred. During those confrontations, local gunmen and Kosovo police engaged in violent exchanges, resulting in the deaths of one police officer and three attackers.
