The world is steadily industrializing, creating more opportunities for improved jobs and livelihoods for many of the planet’s poorest. To truly benefit the global population and the planet, international trade and industry must align with healthier communities, reduced emissions, and cleaner air.
Historically, this hasn’t always been achieved, but the United Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO) is dedicated to making it happen. “We recognize the challenges and issues, but we are here to provide solutions,” says Manuel Mattiat, UNIDO Chief of Staff. “With the knowledge, technologies, and funding available, everything is possible.”
Investing in Countries of the South
Manuel Mattiat addressed UN News at the Global Industry Summit, the final day of the UNIDO meeting, covering various aspects of industrial development in the Global South, including youth entrepreneurship and empowering women entrepreneurs.
As the UN faces significant scrutiny, the Riyadh conference highlights the expertise and insights of the world’s largest multilateral organization, offering investors and businesses a range of concrete solutions to lift the world’s most vulnerable populations out of poverty.
“We are here to build bridges,” Mr. Mattiat explains. Many developed and industrialized nations, rich in resources and development, are ready to invest but have not yet identified the right entry points. This is precisely the aim of our presence in Riyadh: to encourage investments in favor of the least developed countries.
Put People First
On Thursday, UNIDO Member States’ representatives from both developed and developing countries adopted the Riyadh Declaration, advocating for closer cooperation between governments, businesses, and civil society to ensure industrialization leads to greener economies, equitable opportunities, and better livelihoods.
Prioritizing youth and women, the Declaration seeks to increase access to skills and employment, emphasizing the importance of innovation and digital transformation to help developing countries benefit from new technologies and compete in global markets.
The adoption of the Declaration is viewed as a pivotal moment in global industrial policy, offering a framework for governments and international partners to mobilize resources and deliver tangible benefits to communities worldwide.
